Tracking Donation Funnels, Bad News for Twitter & The Most $$$ Keywords

Measure Your Differences
I enjoyed this advice from Hootsuite on how to pick social media metrics. Their number one tip: figure out your organizational goals and base your metrics on that. (And don’t worry about what everyone else is measuring.)

Google’s Most Expensive Keywords
If you administer a Google for Nonprofits AdWords grant, finding keywords that cost less than $2 can be a big pain. Having struggled with this issue myself, I got a kick out of seeing how much some keywords cost. $58 for “bail bonds,” anyone?

Yet Another Nail, Twitter
I’m not a big Twitter user, but even I feel bad for Trump’s favorite social media site. Here’s the latest report about Twitter’s decline. Monthly active users in the United States fell last quarter.

Top Nonprofit Websites, Game of Thrones Data Viz and Get Your Google Analytics Questions Answered

Is Your Website Cool?
TopNonProfits.com studied nonprofit websites, picked out the top trends and highlighted some of their favorite sites.  So what are the top trends? Long scrolls, mobile responsiveness and limited navigation options. Check out their favorite sites here.

Hey Google, What’s Up?
Ever wanted to ask Google Analytics a question, rather than dig through the data? If so, your dream has come true. Google is launching yet another new product called Ask Analytics Intelligence. Here’s the press release from Google and the explanation from TechCrunch. And here’s to hoping this does not put your friendly neighborhood web analyst out a job!

Your Weekly Dose of SEO
I’ve heard SEO called “black magic voodoo” so many times. But it’s about more than attracting clicks to your site; it’s about giving your search users a good experience. Here’s some solid, data-driven advice on SEO best practices. SEO Sherpa highlights their 16 favorite SEO experiments and results. Then, Search Engine Journal tells you to stop messing with spammy inbound links.

You Say Potato, I Say Instant Articles
This newsletter has covered Google’s newish AMP articles (the fast-loading, stripped down webpages designed especially for mobile users) before. Never one to be left out, Facebook is arguing that it’s fast-loading, mobile-friendly Instant Articles are better. Here are the stats on that.

Ad-Blocking Browser, Behind the Scenes of a Click Farm & Free Tickets

The Ad-Blocking Browser
Apple’s noticed that no one likes to be stalked (by ads, that is). So the new version of Safari puts an end (for now) to tracking users’ browsing behavior in order to them serve them ads. The new technology has both alarmed the ad industry and been called a victory for privacy. More details in Tech Crunch and technical info here.

Can Data and Creativity be Friends?
If you feel that data-mania is ruining your creativity, you aren’t alone. Communications and marketing teams complain that nerdy number-crunching is sucking all the emotion and fun out of designing campaigns. But it doesn’t have to be this way, Ad Age argues.

A New Look for Your Facebook Page
Facebook’s rolling out something new. (Surprise, surprise). Nonprofit pages are getting a new template option. Details here. And Facebook is expanding video cover images.

More Nonprofit Benchmarks, Facebook Live Tips and Google Translate Gets Visual

Benchmarks, Benchmarks, Benchmarks
We nonprofit-ers are nosey. We love to know what everyone else is doing and how we fit into the grand scheme. When it comes to media coverage, here’s your answer: the average nonprofit gets two media hits a week. More press and social stats in M+R’s annual media benchmarking report.

A New Way to Target Donors?
This week, Facebook announced yet another new targeting feature. You will be able to upload a list of email addresses, and Facebook will target just those responsible for making purchasing decisions in their home. The new feature is meant to reach shoppers, but I could see it helping to target donors too. Learn more about how this works in Ad Week.

Taking to the (Podcast) Air Waves
If you read this newsletter, you know how much I love Facebook ads. I recently was interviewed on Membership Site Straight Talk Podcast about how website owners can use Facebook ads to drive site traffic and registrations. Listen here.

Make Your Own Data Gifs, Better Blog Posts & The Internet in 355 Slides

What’s New This Week?

What’s Up with the ‘Net?
You’d think that an entire year worth of online trends would be too much information to condense into one Power Point presentation. But you’d be wrong!  Each year, Mary Meeker, a partner in venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins, does a rapid-fire bazillion-slide-long (actually, 355) presentation of the year’s top takeaways. See this year’s presentation here and read Recode’s synopsis and analysis here.

Brits Slightly Dismayed at Facebook Political Ads
The Brits are having an ethical dilemma about the role of Facebook advertising in political elections. Until recently, political campaigns had spending limits on advertising and a ban on TV ads. But the rules don’t cover online advertising, so Facebook is suddenly cashing in. Here’s BBC’s coverage.

Artificial Intelligence Comes for… Me
Last week, I joked about robots taking over the world. But this article makes me worried that it’s really happening… to my job! Check out this scare tactic, oops I mean trend piece, on how artificial intelligence can help automate social media analysis and take the guesswork out of managing accounts.
